Never Feel Sorry for Yourself: A Profile of U.S. Army Veteran and Business Coach Dan Pena
There’s an image out there right now of the “broken” American veteran. That is a veteran who has been through combat, has PTSD, and is now so traumatized that he cannot function in society. In fact, when you mention you are a veteran nowadays, you often get met with questions like “are you okay?” and “do you have PTSD?” The idea is that you’re going to sit on your couch, watch war movies all day, clean your guns, and flip out every fourth of July when the neighbors start lighting off fireworks. The really horrible possibility here is not the myth itself, but the idea that veterans themselves may be starting to believe it. As General Mattis said in a speech last year, “There is no room for military people, including our veterans, to see themselves as victims even if so many of our countrymen are prone to relish that role.” Like Mad Dog says, you’re better than that.
This brings me to the topic of today’s blog: self improvement. If you’re happy with your life the way it is now, and you don’t want anything more, then that is completely fine. Carry on. If, however, you want more out of this life, you have no reason for not taking action to make your life better. Your only problem is probably fear. This fear might evolve from being scared that you won’t succeed, or you might have fear that you don’t have the skills necessary to make your dreams happen. Regardless of where your fear evolves from, it’s keeping you from taking the actions you need to get to be successful in what you want to do. There was probably a time in your life where you didn’t know if you had what it took to serve in combat, and it was your drill instructors and NCOs who gave you the knowledge and competence you needed to do so. For success in becoming a high performance person who takes action to get to his goals, this is where Dan Pena comes in.
There are a lot of snakes in the self-improvement and success coaching industry. Most of the coaches in this market have never really even made their own money or ran any actual businesses outside of coaching. There is, however, one exception to this rule. Dan Pena is a former Vietnam era Army officer and founder of the multi million dollar energy company Great Western Resources, which he started with $820. When it comes to business, Dan has been there, done that, got the tee shirt, and blasted through anything and anyone who has gotten in his way.
Since leaving Great Western, Dan has dedicated his life to producing high performance people, and he has verifiably helped his mentees create over 50 billion dollars in wealth and assets. Like a villain from a James Bond flick, Dan lives in a castle in Scotland where he hosts the most brutal but successful success coaching seminar in the world. His style is much like that of a Marine Corps Drill Instructor: he will rip your head off, shit down your neck, break you down, and then build you back up into a stronger and better version of yourself. At his seminar, he’s made at least one powerful executive shit himself out of fear and used to carry around a riding crop that he would beat attendees with if they fell asleep (no I’m not shitting you). He can’t do that anymore, but his seminars are still a baptism by fire into the world of high performance people, where he teaches his mentees everything they need to know about setting up businesses, raising money, and finalizing deals. Once they are done with the seminar, Dan continues to coach them for a year where they report their activities to him every week in hour by hour detail.
